Audrey Tang blew me away in this conversation. The mix of insight, practical experience and values is one I haven't come across before. Can't recommend this episode more!
This was one of the best episodes! Interesting conversation, the guest was progressive and seemed to have good values. But most important gave information that empowered with new ways of organizing democracy.
Very hopeful discussion, but I am pessimistic that the entrenched lobby industry and big money interest groups and people would ever let the people have a fair and balanced say in government in our current western systems.
Did anyone catch the name of the software for the virtual assemblies? Was it "polis" something? I am struggling to find it online. Audrey also mentions a "facilitation" method that they like, "dynamic facilitation and focus conversation"? - I'm not sure if that's right, but would love to learn more about this! I think people learning to cooperate in big numbers is going to be so important for our collective future! Thank you for this great episode!
One of your most important episodes. Great to learn about a tool that already is a well established proof of concept. How amazing would it be to reproduce this across the globe. The positivity of this episode was a balm - especially because it was still very much grounded in pragmatism and a realistic understanding of human psychology, sociology, and technology. Bravo!
Nate, PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE have Audrey back on ASAP. There is still hope to bend as much as needed but not totally break with this framework. The intro to Marshall Ganz’s work was awesome for me. I’d like to share an alternative big picture perspective on where we are today:
Can we please just elect Audrey Tang as the first Prime MInister of an enlightened world government? Their intelligence and humanity shines through so clearly in this interview, and their real accomplishments signal that these progressive innovations are not mere daydreams. As they said, the first rule of politics: Get off your butt and organize! I especially agree that deliberative citizen assemblies, assisted or augmented by technology to favour maximum horizontal participation and transparency, may be the anitdote to the corruption of our present systems of government. There are so many other points that I want to review and investigate - thank you for introducing me to Audrey! Quick final comment, on the topic of language: Note how many of Nate's guests are bi, tri or polylingual. Our understanding of the world and people is dramatically enhanced when we can toggle between different linguistic affordances and perspectives! eg. when Audrey pointed out the pun in the title of their position. And yet there are still chauvinists of unilingualism! Oh yeah, and their closing quote from Leonard Cohen was perfect!
Great insights…which needs to be part and parcel to Metamoderism—work through of the Metacrisis. It is innovative digital tool box which makes Citizen Participation, Integration and Inoperable; Thanks for bring to the fore.
I feel there are some many potential priority areas that affect planning districts because of the new common ground of understanding. My worldview has security and neighborhood/city planning traverse. A supporting agency that you arbitrator and curator of problem solving. Thanks…becomes a reality realization for plurality and a good neighborhood policy with a broader sense of scrutiny.
I have been looking forward to your session with Audrey Tang and was not disappointed. My usual attitude about AI is one of hesitancy and fear of lack of wisdom of those responsible for its current path. I plan to do lots of sharing of this conversation. Thank you, Nate.

If we were to draw a picture of where we are, it wouldn’t look like the old Peak Oil graphs showing us spiraling into chaos. Instead, it would flip that image upside-down. We’re not at the peak of Western civilization. We’re at its most exhausted point. And maybe—just maybe—that’s a gift. I write about it here: https://open.substack.com/pub/kraigs/p/the-big-picture?r=9flj0&utm_campaign=post&utm_medium=web&showWelcomeOnShare=false
