i'm very glad to see that simon's information about the unsustainability of mining is oozing into the general consciousness. however, please note that we do not NEED wired electricity. we DO need: clean air and water, healthy food, cooking, comfy shelter, and plenty of sleep and exercise. those are precisely our physical needs, and the design criteria for planning a post-fossil-fuel future.
since efficiency is the ratio of output to input, the design output is the needs listed above, and the input is - energy and resources from the living planet that we absolutely depend on.
