Excellent episode. I do not envy you, Nate, having to skate around touchy political positions. It’s important to focus on common ground, even though I suspect I would find myself on a different political game than this guest.
I guess the main focus is not on the current flotsam in the political water but the best path through the coming storm.
Because you so carefully navigate the minefield of American politics, I can share this with people on the other side of the fence who will not take offense.
Nate Hagens always adds to my ‘worldview in progress’. Some of Dan’s points are critical, but his delivery is so ‘inside the beltway.’ He has the cadence of a USG contractor who just attended a classified PowerPoint at DOD or somewhere, e.g., DIA, DHS, etc. It took me ten years to deprogram myself after I retired from the U.S. Department of State so that sort of grated on me. I kept thinking that I was back sitting in the embassy conference room getting briefed before the Iraq war.
NOW I gratefully take my ‘guidance’ from Robin Wall Kimmerer, Francis Weller, Ferris Jabr, Dougald Hines, and many others working in the ‘ruins’ — my ‘instructions’ are from Richard Heinberg — and Nate Hagens is an Assistant Secretary of State back in DC — his task is to decide what key topics to focus on next.
This is an essential courageous conversation , Dan is so clear and articulate. Still finding a balance as a pragmatist to help us live in the Poly Crisis.
You are such a good interviewer Nat, rarely interrupting and asking only relevant considered questions. Thank you both.
I'm at 1:02:53 Are you seriously giving an anti-vaxxer a platform? A broken clock is right twice a day. He's missing the mark and throwing the baby out with the bath water. Neoliberal policies with their prioritization of profits and the market are at the root of many of our health issues in the U.S. Treating human beings like commodities is the problem. If the food being provided through SNAP isn't healthful, change the food, but don't gut a program that helps the most vulnerable people in our society. If our immune systems are poorer because most of us are under-nourished and over-worked being taken for granted as disposable labor for the upper class and kleptocrats, then stop implementing policies that feed the greed monster rather than promoting unscientific b.s. about vaccines. Shame on you. And where are the show notes for "Dan’s references on obesity and nutrition" @thegreatsimplification ? There is no link. He should NOT be speaking about medical and scientific topics he clearly has zero expertise in. It's one thing to state that the health and education of a nation's populace deeply impacts national security. It's another to then make health and medical claims that are not founded on sound logic or science. (Cross-posting in YouTube).
Thank you for clarifying , looks like we will agree to differ. I view peoples credentials to include training, research and experience over certificates. I thought Dan was very creditable in these subject area’s.
Have you read “Fiat Food’ by Mark Lysiak ? I recommend it , as it will give a fully researched history that backs what Dan is saying about the American food system. Especially how it has been designed to make and keep the US population sick and weak.
I have not read that one, but am well versed about our food and medical industries from other sources, as well as my own college studies. I'm not disputing that our food system is poor. I'm disputing his medical and health claims, both implicit and explicit, that cast doubt on the need for vaccinations and federally funded food programs. I'm also calling out his lack of medical and biological expertise, contrasted with his bizarre statements about human biology and health that make it clear he doesn't understand those areas of study - but thinks he does - when he makes these statements. The fact that he's defending someone like RFK Jr., who also has and uses very limited knowledge, while having no professional credentials in these areas of expertise, is a huge red flag that he's making statements that are founded on his ideology and beliefs rather than actual science and good sense policy-crafting.
You really must speak with Viktor Shvets. All of the guests you have interviewed regarding these global shifts bring up system dynamics and specific issues that he has expertise in from multiple domains. Like you, he's incredibly aware of and sensitive to systems thinking, and is not energy blind. What makes him unique and exceptional in this space is he has lived for many years in various countries, including Russia, China, the U.S., and now resides in Australia; and he analyzes from a non-partisan perspective. His analyses are all-encompassing, deep, and grounded in multidisciplinary experience. Please please reach out to him.

Thank you 🙏 Nate Hagen for caring about our earth.
Unbelievable episode, so to the point.
Very much helping me with a direction in this time of despair.
I honour this life with never giving up but it is becoming increasingly difficult to put one foot in front of the other each day.

What are his credentials regarding human biology, health, and medicine? I saw no credentials or experience at all given for him in these areas.
